About the Super Lambanana:
Taro Chiezo is the Japanese artist behind the design of the Lambanana. 125 Super Lambanana’s came to Liverpool in 2008 to commemorate the city’s 2008 Capital Of Culture Celebrations, the first being placed on the Liverpool Strand. Chiezo’s wanted his design to highlight the risks of genetically modified food. The design of the Super Lambanana sculpture also corresponds with Liverpool’s own history as a major port, which had imported Fyffes bananas and the exported Lancashire wool, making the Super Lambanana a very fitting hybrid for the city.
Aiding Chiezo with the project were local sculptors Andy Small, Julian Taylor, Tommy Reason and Ray Stokes. Their team were located in Garston where they made the first 17 foot Super Lambanana sculpture.
