About The Iron Men
Crosby Beach in Merseyside is home to 100 Iron Men sculptures.
Each sculpture weighs around 650kg and is 6ft 2inches tall.
The Iron Men are modelled from Sir Antony Gormley’s own body, the man behind the sculptures.
Crosby Beach was not the Iron Men’s first home, as they appeared in many European exhibitions beforehand.
The sculptures disappear and reappear with the changes in tide!
While the Iron Men originally faced opposition from some due to safety concerns and the ‘offensive’ nature of the art, they are now a much loved addition to Crosby Beach.
This was highlighted in 2007 when Sefton Council ruled that the beach would remain the permanent home of the Iron Men.
Crosby Beach wouldn’t be the same without them!
