History of the LiverBird

This Liverbird card gives a quirky depiction of the internationally recognised symbol of Liverpool.
On top of the Royal Liver Building sits two Liverbirds, both 18 feet tall.
According to local legends, the LiverBirds are a male and female pair. The female supposedly looks out to sea, ensuring the seamen are protected, while the male Liverbird the female looking out to sea to ensure the seamen are protected.
The Liverbird dates back to 1229 when Henry III granted the city of Liverpool the powers of self governance.
In order to authenticate the documents for this, a unique seal was required.
The Liver Bird became the symbol for the seal, and has been the city’s icon for over 800 years.
