History of the Liver Bird

The history of the Liver Bird goes all the way back to 1229, when the city of Liverpool was granted the powers of self governance by Henry III.
The documents needed to authenticicate this required a unique seal, and therefore a Liver Bird was used.
This resulted in the Liver Bird evolving into the city’s icon, and this has been the case for 800 years.
There are some local legends surrounding the Liver Birds, which are situated on the Royal Liver Building, both 18 feet high.
One Liver Bird looks out to sea, supposedly to protect the sea men and the other over looks the city to protect the citizens of Liverpool.
Another myth is that the Liver Birds are chained to the Liver Building and if they were to fly away, the River Mersey would over flow and flood Liverpool.
