Origins Of The Scouse Accent

Irish and Welsh migrants have greatly influenced the Scouse accent.
Due to Liverpool being a prominent port, it became a ‘letting’ pot of dialects and accents.
‘Scouse’ gets its name from a stew which was often eaten by sailors and those less fortunate, as it was a cheap yet filling meal.
The year that Liverpool’s distinctive accent was first recognised was 1890.
According to Alan Crosby, the Scouse accent only became nationally known due to the programme Till Death Do Us Part, which featured a Liverpudlian socialist, and started in 1965.
Keith Szlamp recognised that the Scouse accent was significantly different from other English accents, and therefore made an application in 1996 for it to be come a recognised online dialect.
His request was accepted in 2000, and now when online documents use the dialect it can be categorised as ‘Scouse’.
