Origins Of The Scouse Accent

Liverpool’s distinctive accent was first mentioned in 1890, as up until the middle of the century, the city’s inhabitants spoke practically the same as those in Lancashire.
Liverpool became a melting pot of accents, due to people from all over the world coming to Liverpool via it’s famous port.
Primarily, Welsh and Irish migrants played the biggest part in forming the Scouse accent as we now know it. This is due to the sheer number of Welsh and Irish that came and settled in the city.
While Scouse was recognised in 1890, according to Alan Crosby, it wasn’t until 1965 that the accent was nationally known. This is due to Till Death Do Us Part, a programme that featured a Liverpudlian socialist.
