Origins Of The Scouse Accent

The first reference of Liverpool having its own distinctive accent was in 1890.
This accent is called ‘Scouse’, after a stew that was very popular with sailors and those less fortunate, due to is being a cheap yet filling meal.
Liverpool was a developing port, trading particularly with Ireland, and the city became a ‘melting pot’ of accents and dialects.
There was a prominent influence from Welsh and Irish migrants which helped develop the Scouse accent.
One linguist, Gerald Knowles suggests that the poor health of the 19th century caused Scouse to be a nasal sounding accent.
His theory links to this period where many people had long lasting colds, making them talk in a nasally manner, consequently influencing the younger generations, despite them lacking an actual cold.
