History Of Liverpool

Liverpool officially became a borough in 1207 under King John’s reign, who supposedly designed the city’s street plan. At this time, Liverpool’s population wad very small, records showing just 500 residents in the 16th century.
The increase of trade from the West Indies spurred on the city’s growth and the first commercial wet dock was built in no other than Liverpool in 1715.¬† The 19th century saw the construction of many spectacular buildings in Liverpool, reflecting the city’s wealth, which for some periods during this century, exceeded that of London. The city’s population was also constantly increasing, largely affected by a high volume of Irish migration in the 1840’s.In the early 20th century, Liverpool became the new home of many immigrants from various countries, making our city the diverse and multi cultural hub as we know it today. Liverpool struggled after the first world war, with only 30% of the city’s people being in employment in the early 1930’s. It was at this time that there was many council houses being built in the suburbs of Liverpool, to spread the population out from the overcrowded city center. In the 1960’s, Liverpool’s mersey beat was in full swing, iconic artists being The Beatles, Gerry & The Pace Makers, The Remo Four, & The Stranglers to name but a few.
Liverpool’s culture certainly didn’t die out, having won The European Capital Of Culture Award in 2008 and consequently having hundreds of lambanana’s dotted around the city!
